Hello, lovers of arts, and welcome back to my blog! What I suggest you today is to cast an eye over some pencil portraits. Some of them may be truly amazing, near perfection. What I really appreciate in this technique is the accuracy of the details. The sense of watching a black and white photo instead of a drawing is never to be encountered with any other work of art.
This kind of drawings are part of what is called ‘hyperrealism’. On making a pencil portrait – not to mention landscapes in pencil – talent and skills are not enough. Professional tools are certainly a must, while paciency is absolutely vital – it may take several days until finishing a pencil drawing.
I have used the pencil technique for one year or so, without taking any preparatory courses. However, the experience proved to be the best way of learning and improving my own skills. If you are in an artistic mood and able to focus on detail, choose an inspiring photo (of friends, family or yourself, why not?) and show off!
I decided to start I will start by publishing some steps in my latest project. It is a portrait in pencil (HB, 3B and 7B type).
The initial sketch may look funny, but it is essential, allowing you to draw according to the original features of the model and the proportions. Moreover, in this step you can notice the general appearance and the layout of the future drawing. You should start with drawing eyes – not only are they one of the most difficult aspects of drawing, but also the most expressive part of the human face.
I didn’t took photos of all steps of drawing this portrait, but I’ll make up at the next portrait. Getting back to our model, I’ve finished with the face features and started drawing her hair – frankly, this is the most difficult step, in my opinion, for being hard work, wide drawing surface and the necessity of great accuracy in order to give that it ‘real’ look.
Finally finished! It took almost 8 hours – but it really leaved up to my friend’s expectations, so it’s worth while!
